Guardians of the Galaxy


        In Guardians of the Galaxy, Starlord ends up joining forces with some unlikely allies in Drax, Gomorra, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot in fighting Ronan in preventing him from getting one of the six infinity stones. This crew of Guardians ends up joining forces with the Nova Corps to defend Xandar from Ronan who now has the stone and has decided to use its power to destroy the planet. The Guardians end up all on Ronan’s ship which is taking a nosedive for the city. Groot decides to form his body into something like a tumbleweed around the rest of the group, knowing that he will very much likely die, in order to give the rest of the group a better chance at surviving the crash.


John 15:13 says “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends” (ESV). These were the very words of Christ to his disciples during some of his final instructions to them before his crucifixion. He was telling them this both as a foreshadow of things to come towards the immediate future and as an instruction manual of the attitude of which they should carry themselves moving forward after his crucifixion. Jesus instructs us to live sacrificially for the sake of the good of others. Sometimes we should sacrifice our free time to help a friend or stranger in need.


Groot displayed this very kind of love for the Guardians who he considered to be his friends. He literally risked his own life to save the others. He didn’t know if the others would do the same for him. He had nothing to gain from doing this. He just did it because he saw that he had the ability and opportunity to save the life of his friends and did it without a single thought.


What are you willing to sacrifice for the sake of others? Would you risk your life if it meant that friend would live? How about for a stranger? How about for your enemies? Are you thankful for Christ dying so that you could live? What will you do from now on to live sacrificially for God and others?

Avengers: Infinity War

          In Avengers: Infinity War, during their travels to Earth, the Asgardian people encounter Thanos and his children known as the Black Order. Thor, Hulk, and Loki try to prevent him from being able to use the space stone, which was the Tesseract, but are proven powerless against Thanos. Once the Great Titan, Thanos, successfully retrieves the stone, he destroys the ship, leaving the bodies of the Asgardians that were on that ship, along with the unconscious Thor, to float off in space as they continue their search for the rest of the Infinity Stones. Later on, the Guardians of the Galaxy find him and bring him aboard their ship.
